If I wanted to play all the latest games for years to come, even on low/med settings in the future, how long would this build last me before I would have to upgrade?

Intel i7 4770k
AMD r9 280x crossfire (Sapphire toxic version)
16gb ram (cl9 1600 mhz)

Any answer is much appreciated.

That would last you quite a while. If you are willing to go down to low/medium settings it could conceivably serve you well for up to four or five years.

Power wise, a few 3-5 years anyway easily, can prob move to a newer GPU and be perfectly happy in 3 years or so

you can play games with that build for a long time, even at max settings most of games, whenever compatible with new technologies such as DirectX, etc..

I remember games such as Just Cause 2 asking for DirectX10.1(my card did only support DirectX 10, so I could not play it), or Crysis III (DX11)

Also, gpu is something you can upgrade if necessary (more easily than a cpu+board), so that could also add some extra years.
