Hey there,

Just a few quick questions here; 1) Will the steamroller CPUs utilize the current AM3+ socket? (currently got a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3)

We have heard no news for a long time regarding Steamroller FX. If it is released, it will probably be AM3+ and will be released in Q1 2014. I am not holding my breath though. Rumors have said that Piledriver is the last of the FX and with AMD's focus on the APU and HSA, I don't think they care. I was waiting for the next 8 core steamroller, but I might pull the trigger of the current FX soon if I hear nothing.

There are lots of rumors... nobody knows for sure. There were rumors a while back that the FX line and the AM3+ socket was dead.

However on the recent AMD earnings call, AMD noted they grew their sales of high-end desktops based on FX chips, while notebook chip sales declined. So I would expect that they would not kill the FX line.

I know, it doesn't make too much sense for them to axe it. They put in almost nothing for R&D. I try not to believe the rumors, but we haven't heard anything good yet unfortunately.

The new AMD cpu-apu roadmap for consumers will be released November 11-12 at the AMD Developers Conference . Until then all we will hear is idle speculation from would-be gurus. Since I don't believe in tea reading, I will wait until the official information is released in 3 weeks.Don't listen to any of these prognosticators. They are simply guessing and have nothing material to add to your knowledge on this point.

My sources say that Steamroller will DEFNITELY be AM3+ and they also say that Excavator will "most likely" be AM3+. After that, AMD wants to unify FM2 and AM3 sockets so that one socket will support ALL of their CPUs and APUs. I think that they should call this AM4 but they might call it FM3, I'm really not sure.

I don't know where half the rumors come from. It'll be good to hear official info in just three weeks time. Personally, I would be really disappointed if FX was cancelled, so I clutch at straws like the earnings call, where AMD mentioned FX as a product that increased in revenue.
