Hey everyone! Im struggling here and thought I would ask for the publics help... I recently purchased the MSI G45 and the intel i5 4670 k for a decent upgrade. I received them both and the first mobo i got seemed like it was DOA because I have no sound coming from it at all. I contacted manufacturer and they sent me a new one no questions asked.
I got it yesterday and of course... same problem. All new drivers are installed from realtek (2.71) It says all of the sounds are working but it only says the digital connection is plugged in. It wont detect my standard 3.5mm speaker plug? ?? I have tried re installing windows (clean install) multiple times and installing the drivers but it is the same problem!? I am in the process of getting all of the new windows updates hoping that will fix the problem...

It detects a digital input when nothing is plugged in, but wont detect my 3.5mm plug. Confused!!!

Any advice???

Are you plugged into the GREEN audio jack? All the way in?

It's odd that the same issue occurred with 2 different boards. If it was just one MB, I'd suggest working a plug in and out of the digital jack in case it was stuck closed. But that's highly unlikely it would occur on both boards.

Yeah pretty strange. I made sure it was the lime green jack. I feel it is software issues since it is the second MOBO that is doing the exact same thing... I am just at a loss... the analogs are all grayed out but it detects the S/PDIF out saying something is plugged in when there isnt... im very frustrated. :-/ any ideas to try would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried plugging in speakers or a headset? Front and/or back audio ports? Double check your front panel audio header that it is plugged in correctly. I know it is key w/one missing pin, but check it anyway.

What's interesting is that I am in the exact same boat - I got an MSI g45 and a 4770k. First mobo - no sound and won't detect when a 3.5mm is plugged in. Got it RMA'd and second mobo (swapped with different unit, same model) had the exact same issue. The only sound I can get is from the built in HDMI port, but only after updating to the newest intel VGA drivers. The Realtek chip will always "detect" a digital output even if there isn't one plugged in - that's just due to the design of those outputs - but I have an optical stereo system and even though windows says it's outputting digital it's not. Another interesting thing about the optical output is that both boards didn't have the red laser physically on - even if you weren't using the optical out this laser should be on if the computer is on (which is what made me believe it was a HW issue at first). I've tried updating all drivers to the current versions and updating BIOS to 1.5 on both motherboards. I also have tried this across completely new installs of windows 7 and XP - still to no avail. As per my front ports - they behave the same way as my back ports. At this point I'm at a loss... Not sure if I should try for another RMA or just buy a sound card. I'm also fairly certain it is a software issue, but I can't seem to track it down. 4 motherboards with exactly the same defect is statistically very unlikely unless it was a known issue and my brief talk with MSI tech support pointed to it not being a typical issue.

mschlafer - what RAM were you using in this build? I don't think it would make a difference but I'm trying to get some correlation here.

So weird that we both are having the same problem. On a better note at least its not just me or just you... (trying to find some silver lining here). The only luck I had was to go buy a sound card. That fixed everything... except for my frustration!!
I am using 2133 8 gig ram (Team C) Windows 7 64bit Home edition

And I am never buying an MSI board again!

You are not alone - I have updated everything I could also. Now I am in the IT business and have built many PC's however I still have no sound from this motherboard. I believe it to be a driver issue also, as to which or what one I am not sure. By the way mine is the GD65 version and using 4770k. If I find an answer I will let you know!

Was anyone here able to find a fix for this issue. I just build my new pc with this Z87-G45 board (i5-4570k processor) and cannot get the sound to work at all! Really frustrated.. Should I RMA the board?

On you folks' problematic MBs, what does Windows report is the default output device in CP/Sound/Playback? Does it report the correct device (speakers, headphones, etc)?

Well i figured it out after many many hours.

It is indeed a software issue i believe. I think the auto recognition is not working.

What you need to do is:
(FYI i have the z87-G45 board, with i5-4670k cpu, and windows 7 64 bit)

-Go to MSI site and download latest sound driver for this board (Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.7111)
-Install Driver and reboot
-Go to "Realtek HD Audio Manager"
-Go to "Device Advanced Settings" (gear icon in upper right)
-Under playback device choose "mute the rear output decive, when a front headphone is plugged in"
-Under Recording Device choose "Separate all input jacks as independent input devices
-Click OK button
-Go to "Connector Settings" (wrench icon in lower right )
- Check both options (Disable front panel jack detection, Enable auto popup dialog..."
-Click OK button

This worked for me. Hope this works for others as well!
Take Care,
-Brendan

Run Windows update again and again and again it will keep updating windows and finally you will get the right update to make it work. I had the same problem, there must be over 300 updates to windows 7.

Just checking in to see if the original poster (or people that had the same problem) had found a solution. I have an MSI B85M-G43 (so slightly different but not really) and I can't get any sound. The ports on the back of the motherboard itself don't work, the S/PDIF port doesn't even have light coming from it (even though Windows says the digital audio is connected and enabled, like mpac said above. I can confirm, however, that this is NOT a software issue. I don't know what it is, at one point I had audio working but after I got my computer all set up it hasn't worked since. I have a multi-boot computer and the sound does not work on Windows 7 64-bit, Ubuntu 14.04 amd64, or Mac OS X 10.9.3 x86_64. All of them are aware of the device, but none of them can produce any real output. It looks like I will be purchasing a sound card soon, but it would be so great if I didn't have to. Thoughts/solutions?

To anyone that sees this, it is a hardware issue (bad motherboard). I suggest either buying a new one or investing in a sound card.

Had the same problem, but found out the answer!!

- go to "services.msc"
- Locate the "Windows Audio"
- Tap "Log on"
- Select "This account" and type ind "NT AUTHORITY\LocalService" and blank the passwords, now hit enter.

Just go with the pop up, and then it should work, it did for me!

- can be you might need to find the newest "On-Board audio drivers" at = http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z87MG43.html#down-driver&... 64
- remember to select the driver for your system, the link is for windows 7 64bit

- hope this will help some of you guys.

for most of the mb
you have to intall the audio driver on the CD first,
and upgrade it online to the newest, it may solve your problem

Well, this did it for my board. How the hell can Win7 get login/perms wrong for its own services?! This was a brand new install and it was setup wrong. Thanks, M$! Everything else on this board was a breeze to setup (including overclocking the memory which was incorrectly tagged in SPD rom as 1333MHz). Highly recommended hardware!
