So I am doing some research for my first computer build and not sure about how to set up my GPU. Currently, I plan on buying a GTX 660 since its relatively inexpensive but has good performance. But I was wondering, would it be better to get 1 high end graphics card, like the 660, or get 2 mid grade graphics cards? For the 2 GPU setup to work, I would prefer the total cost of them is around the same as the 660, which is $210 on NewEgg.
If you could name the graphics card that would fit this setup that would be great! Thanks for the advice.

Solution
The 660 is not a great deal. I highly recommend the radeon 7950 for around $170. The 7950 outperforms in usually for $40 less. To answer your question though, at that price rangea single GPU is much better than a CF/SLI solution. I would never get CF/SLI if you're stending less than $500 on GPU(s)

I would say go for the HD 7950 also. The GTX 660 is really more on the low-mid range than it is mid range. The GTX 660ti is more of a mid range card though. At least as I understand the ranking.

But as for SLI/Crossfire it would do you no good to SLI to low end cards the performance would just not be there. Get a good mid-high end card and SLI later if needed. Even with my SLI GTX 670 setup if I were not running 3 27" monitors in a Surround setup I would have got a single card as I would have not needed SLI.

with SLI there's always a chance of artifacts and such and you get about a 20-35+ fps in games, like ingtar said just get the best single card your money can buy. I can suggest the GTX 760(MSI perferabbly) or for a bit more the R9 280X

I've been running SLi rigs since 2004 and have not seen that unless the cards are OC'd too far so stop with the BS. :non:

Is there a specifc type of the 7950 you would recommend? I would prefer to stay under $200 for a graphics card.
Thanks for the help!

I would recommend this one: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-fx795atdkc
There's a couple others around the price range too.

i know its an old thread but recently got to test out some aspects of this question i have an amd fx 8 core 4ghz think its an 8890 but not sure and an r9 280x and had to tune down the graphics and res on a few of my games as they kept cutting out just closing them selves so facing the question my self up grade or double up i chose double up as if found one on special offer for £100 bargain! now playing mwo at 55fps in the middle off a fire fight with every thing set to very high, where as before only particles and effects were set to just high and everything else set to low reduced res from 1980 x 1080 to 1600x900 just to maintain 20fps in similar situations so doubling up has its pro's the only bonus to having a single card for the same value is a potential reduction in wattage
