Currently I have a gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 3GB graphics card. I was wondering how much improvement will I get if I purchase a GTX 780. I mean they are both 3 GB right? How is it possible that the GTX 780 is better than a card that is also 3 GB. Also the HD 7950 is running a 1000mhz core clock. This is about 50 MHz faster than a GTX 780. Looking at the numbers the HD 7950 should blow the GTX 780 away.

The reason I'm asking is I'm about to get a bonus at work and was seeing all the reviews on the GTX780 vs. this card and that card and every time the GTX smokes the other cards in the benchmarks and seems to get "near titan" performance. Can't afford a Titan but the 780 is in reach. A little help deciding here is appreciated thanks.

I do game but also do Photoshop and some Graphics Design programs as well. Will the GTX 780 improve this as too?

thank you for all your advice in advance.

Solution
you cant just compared clock speed and vram when looking at gpus; similarly, you can compared an intel Pentium 4 running at 3ghz with an intel i7 running at 3ghz.

The 780 is much faster, since its based on a new, improved architecture. Im sure you can tell by the benchmarks exactly how much faster it is, and if you can justify spending ~$650 to achieve that improvement over your 7950.

You seem to be mistaking clocks for a measurement of speed, its got nothing to do with it, its just what the card operates at and is only indicative of speed when comparing two of the same card, for example a 780 at 1000Mhz would be faster than one at 900Mhz.
