I just built my first gaming rig, and have 8 gigs of ram installed, and it registers all 8 but says that only 3.9 gigs are usable. I have Windows 7 64 bit, so its not my OS. I have tried all the ram slots with the same result. I have also updated all the drivers for the motherboard, as well as trying countless troubleshooting methods. I'm basically out of ideas... Can anyone help?

I am happy that your identify your problem I hop I helped you :d all the best. And yeah if slot 0 and 3 same color then it should be fine to use them.

I checked Belarc Advisor and this is what came up under memory:

3998 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'DIMM0' has 4096 MB
Slot 'DIMM1' is Empty
Slot 'DIMM2' has 4096 MB
Slot 'DIMM3' is Empty

So i believe that your motherboard has no issues, probably you have the same issue as i had with my PC before which i had to update my BIOS ' which is risky if you do any mistake, you might lose your motherboard ' and reinstall windows.

Also have you tested your rams ?? if you did not use software called memtest 64-bit. Also as a recommendation try swap the rams slot and try to use 2 slot near each other like Slot 0 - slot 1 . dont try to use slot 0 - slot 3.

Really? I've heard that you should use the slots with correlating colors, in my case slots 0 and 2 or 1 and 3. But then again I am a noob at this so i could be wrong.

I updated BIOS to the latest version and checked the slots and the ram and still it only picks up 4 out of 8 gigs. i don't have any blank CDs so i cant run the ram test.

Anybody have any other ideas? This is driving me insane!
