Hello

I would like to set up a network between two home computers and possibly a Mac.

How would I do that? Do I need a computer to use as a server or do use harddrives link together to do it?

Solution
If all the computers you want to share between are on the same Local Area Network (that is, connected to the same router) all you need to be do set up sharing between them. They'll then share data over the network through the router.

Which versions of Windows are these PCs running?

I am running Windows 8.1 and when I get a Mac it will be 10. something. Not sure buying used or new.

I want to set up something because I will begin studying IT soon.

Plus I want to be able to set up something where I can put info or software at one location and have all computers access it.

If g335 is going to be learning about networking, then RDP is not the solution for him. SchizTech's answer is the best. Any version of Windows in use today can do basic NetBIOS networking not needing a domain controller or DNS server. The MAC should be able to play along by using (from the Finder desktop) Go>Servers (or similar - dont have a Mac with me) and then enter SMB: followed by the name of the Mac.
