With "Damn Vulnerable Linux" being dead and unavailable for download are there any other distro's out there that I can use as a pre-setup "victim" target for penetration testing/training?

Windows is always available for that.

When properly configured, Windows is every bit as secure as Linux - arguably more so. Blind evangalism, and knocking Microsoft at every opportunity, does Linux no favours.

If properly configured and diligently maintained. That's a big if. Blind evangalism, and praising Microsoft at every opportunity, does users no favours.

Which is why I refrain from making off-topic remarks about Microsoft. Would that everyone did the same.

Windows was not under discussion in this thread until you felt the need to make one of your usual childish jibes. The fact is that if you want a truely secure operating system you will plump for one of the BSDs, not the increasingly messy Ubuntu.

Honestly, the BSDs are really secure, and RHEL is as well...though server/workstation RHEL isn't normally a proposition for a home user. You can, however, typically achieve similar levels of security on Fedora, or Arch...Ubuntu can be made to do it as well, it just takes digging a bit deeper through the "user friendly" bits to get to the meat and potatoes.
