I am new to this site and would like to know what SSDs can be used with this laptop. My target is a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB+Original HDD 1TB 5400RPM (if two slots are open)
Update: After a screw up with Amazon (account "on hold") I got the PC, it works great BTW, I finally found the second port and it worked with a 2.5" HDD, (I got a few pictures off that) waiting on SSD.

In a nutshell: What drive type will work with this laptop? (For a fact) http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CU9GLUM

Solution
There are two bays. Both bays are standard SATA connections. The optical drive isn't a standard SATA connection, and cannot be removed to install a third drive. The mSATA connection piece is given only if you order the machine with an SSD installed. I have already left a clear and plain review about this exact question in my review on Amazon.

To be clear: One SATA bay filled with the included(ultra-slow off-brand HDD), the other SATA bay Empty. The two ram slots that you can access(the other two are hidden) are in a very tight spot and care should be used when installing more ram.

I have installed Windows 7 on this machine as I despise Windows 8. So far the machine runs exactly like my desktop machine before I moved to China. And when...

Thank you! I hope I am doing this post right. My question now is can anyone confirm two slots before I buy?

Is the computer still within the warranty period? According to this review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Update-MSI-GT70-2OC-065US-Notebook.99472.0.html
Installing a new drive or upgrading even the RAM will void the warranty:
"Although the MSI shell allows for easy access to internal components, users will have to break the warranty seal first before removing the maintenance panel underneath. This is extremely unfortunate as even a simple hard drive swap or RAM upgrade will entail voiding the warranty. Thus, any internal tampering is recommended only after the warranty has expired."

They recommend a secondary drive but they do not list the hardware capabilities of the expansion bay.

I tried to D/L a manual from MSI but was unsuccessful. Have you a manual for it? Have you looked in the manual for drive bay capabilities?

Good luck!

I do not have the laptop yet, my plan on the warranty topic is to test everything first. It is very unfortunate that they added that void condition. The current entirety of my question is what bay(s) there are and how many.
This is off topic but the amazon site lists 3.2-3.4GHz as the CPU speed, is that turbo/overclocking, an upgrade, or a typo:http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CU9GLUM/ref=mw_dp_mpd/183-7728227-7261668?pd=1
Also, 2 solid weeks of reading reviews, posts on gaming laptops, and company info only got me what it comes with. I don't think it can found out without actually owning the thing. Disassembly videos, maybe (if there are any decent ones)
I found a random site that has a PDF file that I can't view on mobile. http://www.manualowl.com/p/MSI/GT70/Manual/162202(My old NV55c shuts off before boot 99/100 times and wouldn't charge the one time it did. PSU I guess)

3.4 would be the max turbo speed: http://ark.intel.com/products/75117

I guess that the web points everywhere, I can only be sure when I get it and I decide to break that probable sticker on the computer that probably has a second, empty bay. This is the kind of thing that makes me mad. (Another custom page showed me the opposite) >:|

I understand and wish I could have given you a definitive answer. Hate to see that some upgrades void the warranty.

Well, it says up to 6 Gb/s so it could be anything below 6 Gb/s.

I meant: does this mean two SATAIII drives (along with this page)
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/mobile-chipset-hm87.html

It says:
"Next generation high-speed storage interface supporting up to 6Gb/s transfer rates for optimal data access with up to 4 SATA 6Gb/s ports."

But they add the disclaimer that:
"Actual number of ports available may vary by system configuration. Please consult your system vendor for more information."

So, you'd have to check with MSI for more clarification on this point. My guess is that they support more than one port but, more than that, I couldn't say.

Thank you for all the info you found. I found very good pics:http://vr-zone.com/articles/msi-shows-off-its-super-raid-in-the-gt70-gaming-notebook/15462.html That show me a msata setup. I will have a definite answer next month!

Please be sure to let us know!

I have installed Windows 7 on this machine as I despise Windows 8. So far the machine runs exactly like my desktop machine before I moved to China. And when I say install Windows 7, it isn't your traditional method to install it, so don't expect to pull out a Windows 7 installer and have it work as you plan. It took me an hour of testing and tinkering in the BIOS, but I am typing this from my GT70 2OC-065US, using a VPN I setup from China right now. I installed an SSD into the free bay, and put my Windows 7 on it, and turned the 1TB included drive into a storage device. I did not alter the BIOS version nor install a different BIOS to get the machine to take Windows 7.

In short, two SATA bays, one filled. No mSATA unless you order the SSD from the factory.

That should clear all of this up.
