My computer keeps freezing or restarting on its own. When it freezes it stops on what ever the monitor is displaying and the speakers "stutter" what ever sound was playing right as it froze. When it restarts, the screen goes black and appears to just be starting up. None of the fans or LED's in the case turn off though. It's been happening infrequently since I got it last Christmas, typically under heavy load but not always. It's gotten more frequent and happens when I'm working on something with low demand like word.

Windows 8
Radeon HD 7950
AMD FX 8120 8 core 3.1 GHz
700 W power supply
1 TB Toshiba HDD
8 GB DDR3 RAM

I should probably mention that when I got the computer the HDD was in crooked which leads me to believe it was bumped or something because it fits just fine normally (I opened the case and fixed it). It came with a Radeon HD 6640 (? I don't remember exactly, the 1GB one) and I think the problem has gotten only slightly worse since I replaced it. I've put 2 more fans it and it's running under load at about 45 C. Thanks for the help.

Hello MediocreHero.

Time to do some troubleshooting!

Does this happen if you're running a video output directly from the Motherboard? Or only when doing output from the video card? Is there a certain application that you're running whenever this happens? How long does it normally take for this to happen after turning the computer on? Are you able to find out at what temp the computer starts doing this? Sorry for all the questions, it's just best to be thorough.

Judging by these symptoms however, I'm guessing it's either the HDD, the CPU, or the Motherboard itself. After some troubleshooting we can get it singled out though.

I never looked at this after I posted it, but thank you. I ended up replacing most of the computer; new RAM, new Motherboard, new CPU, etc. The old hard drive is in it but it runs so slowly I have it work document storage. I only saw this because my computer is having an issue where it won't turn on now and I came back on hoping to get some help on that. Hopefully you didn't lay awake at night wonder what happened to me.

I laid awake for 2 years.

Thank you for finally giving me closure. I can now rest in peace.

Just kidding, happy it all worked out for you!
