I know I'm a noob but I was wondering if you need a certain chipset on your motherboard to fit a cetain cpu. Like if I have a core i7 4770k or a i3 540 do I need a H61/H62/H67/Z77 chipset for the certain CPU etc?

Yes. But the socket is the most important thing. For a Haswell CPU you need LGA 1150.

For Sandy and Ivy Bridge you need LGA 1155.

Once you know the socket type you can choose a specific chipset with the features you need. For example even with a 'K' series CPU if you have a Haswell LGA 1150 build you will need to pair it with a Z87 chipset based motherboard to overclock the CPU.

Edit: Oh and an i3 540 is even older and LGA 1156.

Yes, the K model CPUs are unlocked (meaning you can overclock them) and thus can only be overclocked on a Z77 / Z87 motherboard. The i7 4770k is a Haswell CPU so you would need to get a socket 1150 Z 87 motherboard. (Z77 is for Ivy Bridge / Sandy Bridge CPU's and wouldn't fit or work in an 82 / 87 Motherboard.

Edit: This is my first build that I have listed in my specs below. I had no clue about any of this and I just learned as I read the comments off newegg and also googling stuff like "what motherboard to go with an i5 2500 CPU" for example.

No. Click the wiki links I posted above. They list all the chipsets and features of each available for each socket.

The only sockets you need to concern yourself with if you are building/buying a new computer are LGA 1150 ( Haswell ) and maybe LGA 1155 ( Sandy and Ivy Bridge ). Everything else is obsolete. And really if you are getting a new computer Haswell is the best and newest choice.
