Hi, I've worked as a network engineer in an ISP, worked in Deutsche Bank, and now looking after internal networks in a global recruitment company (we're probably in around 40 countries right now).

My advice is to read the official CCNA book (there's 2 parts, ICND1 and ICND2), this will give you a good ground for starting to learn about networking. It's also highly recognizable in this industry (all Cisco certifications are).

The most common brand of network routers and switches is Cisco and Juniper. For firewalls, common brands are, again, Juniper (their SRX's) & Cisco (their ASA's), but more predominantly Checkpoint products.

Routers vary depending on office size, for example a Cisco 887 would be for a small office (it has one DSL connection), a Cisco 1841, or 1921 for a medium office (it has 2 WAN slots), and a 2911 for a larger office (with 4 WAN slots). These are only office routers. Now if we get into the core network in the datacenter, you'll find Cisco Nexus devices, Cisco 6500's, Juniper MX 80's, etc.

For switches in offices, you will mostly find Cisco 2960's, 3560's, 4500's, or Juniper EX series switches eg 3200's, 4200's. In the datacenter you will find more EX 6200's and 8200's.

Server's are hugely HP. Everyone uses HP blade servers.

Hope this helps
