Does anyone know how to choose the right processor(CPU). I have a HP dc7700 w/ a Intel Pentium D(R) processor. I want to upgrade to a newer more faster processor. Thanks in advance.

You could swap your CPU out for an Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 and below. It should work.
It has the same socket PLGA775.
Look at this link for more information on CPU compatibility:

The motherboard you have is Socket 775 and the CPU can be changed. There are two problems with that, 1) HP does not provide a list of supported processors and 2) HP has two advisories for that system for CPU upgrade which implies to me it will likely be a less than smooth change over. It can be done though. Advisories found here http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAG...
For a CPU upgrade, I think a Core 2 Duo E6400 is about the best processor supported by that model (at least it appears to be the best that came with the DC7700 models) and this should give you an idea of the performance difference http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/515/Intel_Core_2_Duo_E...
