Hey guys,

At the moment I have an AMD 8120 @ stock (Because I'm not getting any stability OCd past stock on air). I am thinking about upgrading my processor soon ish and I need some help! Intel vs AMD is an intense battle and I want to hear both sides. For amd I am looking at this → http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284 and for a comparable price (Because I know nothing about intel) on the intel side I am looking at this → http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115233 . Now If I do go to the intel side I will have to get a new motherboard. So please be honest with telling me what would be the most beneficialfor me. I know that the 8350 is just an overclocked version of the 8120 but it is stable, that is key. Now I know nothing about the way intel processors are labeled to if you can shed some light in the subject for me that would be amazing. On a side note, if I wait longer to upgrade I may be able to go to this → http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116901 as long as the mobo isn't like $200. Please, what do you guys think!

Build specs:
AMD 8120@ stock
MSI 7970 Twin Frozr
Asrock 970 extreme 3
650w PSU
Diablotek evo
1TB HD

you cant overclock it at all???

i've never heard of that.... have you tried multiplier increase? what about FSB?

your best bang for your buck is throw a closed loop liquid setup on your machine, and OC the 8120.

nothing within reason is going to give you a huge performance increase. the 8320 isn't that much better than the 8120 at gaming.

What are you going to be using the PC for?

For gaming, the i5-3570k will get you better performance than the 8350. However the 8350 should do fine in most games.

For extreme multitasking and using apps that scale well with multiple cores the 8350 will be better than the i5.

The i5-3570k uses intel Z77 motherboards. A decent one will cost you at least $125. The i7-4770k uses intel Z87 motherboards, which go for around the same price ($125 or more for a good one).

If you want to save some money I would go with the 8350. It is more than decent for gaming and great for multitasking. Plus you don't have to spend money on a new mobo, and you could use that extra money to get a good aftermarket CPU cooler (Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is a good one at the very competitive price of $30) to overclock the 8350, bringing it more in line with the i5-3570k when it comes to gaming and single-threaded performance.

Hi. Both are good. Essentially there is a bit off trade off. For Multi threading AMD is still on top for that in the way they are cionstructed. For Performance, Intel still has the lead. If you want an over clocking option with Intel, you need to go with a "K" processor, such as the 3570k. If you want multithreading with Intel, you need to go with an i7, and yes, you would need a new Motherboard with an Intel Processor. The 3570k / 3770k are 3rd gen Processors (Ivy Bridge ) and the 4670k / 4770k are 4th gen ( Haswell ). For an Intel Motherbaord, you can get a good ASRock for under $200.

I can OC, just nothing past stock has been stable for me. Even at a mere 3.5GHz when stock is 3.1, I cannot stably run anything, I get outrageous BSODs and then this dumb problem where the computer turn on all fans spin, I can feel everything running, but the PC will not show a picture until I clear the bios with the CMOS and return everything to stock, then it will boot flawlessly.

And the PC is a gaming set up. And I was thinking about just going liquid instead but I just wasn't sure if liquid was better than switching to Intel, even at the risk of the extra money.

It does sound like a cooling issue, but from what I;ve seen, liquid cooling is only marginally better than Air cooling. I am running air and am OC'd to 4.6 Ghz. I have seen these 4770k's OC'd to 4.8 Ghz without issue, but my cooler has held me back. AMD has been nortorious for having a high TDP at stock.

Yeah, It's really odd to me how running a minecraft server and playing off the same PC brings my temps to 65c on core temp, which is very very close to maxx temp

The 8350 is not an oc'd 8120, its piledriver which is improved architecture, go look at some reviews of them and your mobo, only good 8 oc'ing mobo I've read about vrm wise is gigabyte ud3, the rest of the 970s (although feel free to correct) dont have suitable vrms and should not be oc'd on with 8 core.

So, do you think if I got a new mobo and maybe even something like a corsair H55 that my CPU would perform better and be stable OCd? or do you think just go 8350 with a new mobo and air?
