Well, if you game with a single 1080p monitor, a GTX 760 or the R9-280X will be great choices for you.

Radeon 7950 3gb like THIS.

Three game bundle, easy o/c to 7970 stats, great price.

My favorite card in this price range is the GTX 760

EVGA's new cooler design is great for OCing, but most of the manufacturers of this card will do fine.
If you want to shoot towards the lower end of your budget AMD's HD7950 is going for just over $200 sometimes if you shop around a bit. AMD's new offering, the 280x will run at the top end of your budget, and offer the best performance you can afford right now. It is basically a rebranded HD7970, which was AMD's top of the line card from the last generation.

Something to consider as well, OP, especially since R9 280X's are basically rebadged 7970s.
