Hey guys,
I'm doin my first build so as you can imagine I'm gettin stuck at certain areas. I'm looking at a Iiyuma gaming monitor which has a 120hz refresh rate. I believe i need to use the dual DVI-D cable to enjoy this feature as hdmi only allows for 60hz. The motherboard I'm getting here, the gigabyte z87x-ud3h, in the onboard graphics specs it says the DVI-D port supports a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 @60hz. I'm wondering would this limit the 120hz refresh rate feature on my monitor, only enabling a 60hz refresh rate. As the main reason I'm getting the 120hz is to be able to enjoy the much higher FPS that will be produced from my graphics card. Many thanks for your time.

I must add that my monitor is a full hd 1920 x 1080p resolution @120 hz. Thanks

I wouldn't expect onboard graphics to give you more than 60 FPS unless you are running some older or less graphically demanding games.

You will need a dual-link DVI-D or DisplayPort connection to transmit 1080p @ 120 Hz, and most dedicated GPUs have at least one of these two connections. If you want to game at 120 Hz, I suggest you pick up one of those instead of relying on onboard graphics.

Thanks anz, I will be getting a graphics card too with a dual DVI-I port. So do you mean I wouldn't need to make any connection to the motherboard DVI-D port, if I have the graphics card port. Sorry I'm not too knowledgeable on this. Also, if I can make the connection to the graphics card instead of the mobo, would a dual DVI-D cable that come with the monitor be able to connect to my Dual DVI-I port on the graphics card. Thnks again :)

If you are getting a graphics card then you would connect the monitor directly to the graphics card and not the mobo.

Dual link DVI-D and dual link DVI-I are not compatible. They use different cables and different sockets. So make sure whatever GPU you buy has the correct connection types to be able to connect to your monitor.

All I can say in general about adapters is that if you get the right version it should work.

However not all adapters were created equal. Make sure you are buying one from a reputable vendor and manufacturer. Amazon is a good site generally but with cheap electronic products like adapters they fulfill a lot of orders from 3rd-party vendors that have spotty track records when it comes to trustworthiness and reliability. I suggest you do your research and look at customer feedback for whatever product you are planning to buy.
