Hi,

My Win XP computer shuts down while booting up. I inserted the Boot Disc that I created when I installed the new HD and software. The system works. However while in the booting/start-up w/o the disc the computer will shut down and the power light blinks. I unplugged the unit and the power light continues to blink. Then I hold down the power key and count to 5. The light stops blinking.

This began Sunday morning October 20th, 3012. By the way, when booting from the disc the computer works fine.

I took the unit into Fry's where I bought the PCU, thinking the issue is the PCU. The issue didn't replicate while there. The unit ran fine. I have become very reliant on the computer as it has all my work software and data on it.

Through the process of elimination... Hmmm, I will check and replace the power cord as I recently adopted a kitten.

Please, help.

Thanks,

Well, did the new power cord help? I doubt it, but in any case see that the kitty doesn't chew on it.. I once saw a neighbour's kitten that lost part of the tongue for chewing on a power cord.

Other possible causes are:
1. The PSU may be set on 225V instead of 115V. At Fry's they should have 225V so that may be why it has no problem there.
2. SATA Drivers may be missing or corrupted so you may need to reistall/update them.
3. The SATA port the HD is connected to, may be damaged
4. The system drive MBR (Master Boot Record) may be damaged... the disk drive may be providing it...

Suggestions:
1 to 3 are obvious... 4 you may need to renew the MBR and Bootsector... do it with the boot disk from the Recovery Console... Repair the MBR with the command "Fixmbr" followed by "Fixboot".. complete instructions in the linked articles.
