Is this a new drive? If yes, have you formatted it to work with a Mac? If no, has it been used with a PC or formatted with a PC?

I take it the drive shows up in Finder then. Have you tried using Disk Utility to Verify or Repair permissions on that drive? If not, try verifying the permissions and if necessary repairing the permissions and see if that helps.

To get to Disk Utilities you will need to open Launchpad and you can open Disk Utilities from there. I'm not in front of a Mac right now so I will have to get back to you on the specifics of what to do next. I have verified and repaired permissions without any data loss in the past.

right click on the drive in Finder and get info. Make sure you have:

1. Enough available space to accept the files you're transferring.

2. Under Sharing & Permissions make sure you have Privilege set to Read & Write and not Read Only. That can prevent a transfer.
