Problem: 4770 running very hot with stock cooler

Hello everyone,
I assembled my new PC a few days ago and everything is running just fine except I get very high temperatures on my 4770 with the stock cooler. When I run Prime95 with 8 threads HWMonitor says it goes as high as mid 90°C which is much higher then my old PC. I thought that maybe I mounted the heat sink incorrectly or that the original intel tim didn't spread well, so I removed it, cleaned everything with isopropyl alcohol and applied some new tim (arctic silver 5), but the temperatures are just a few degrees lower.

Also I find it odd that the CPU doesn't throttle at all at this temperatures, it just stays at maximum boost at 3.9 GHz all time during the Prime95 test.

Is this normal (I'm pretty sure it's not) and what could be the problem?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Those are normal temperatures for a fully loaded 4770 on the stock cooler. The stock coolers Intel bundles are barely enough for an i3 under load and are incredibly overloaded on the i7. The thermal interface material Intel puts under the heat-spreader lid on the chip seems to get cheaper each generation, making low performing coolers even worse. Get an aftermarket cooler on the chip pronto.

Get yourself a Hyper 212 EVO. Its a cheap aftermarket cooler but its one of the best in the budget range and is a heck of a lot better than the stock coolers. Its not much good for overclocks ect but running at stock speeds its great.

With power disconnected, test how well your cooler is mounted.
See if all 4 pushpins are completely through the motherboard and locked. If you can wiggle the cooler with your finger, you need to remount.
The trick is to push down on diagonal pins at the same time.

I think the throttling temperature is more like 100c, so you may be ok.

Thanks for the replies. Checking the heatsink mounting and the pushpins on the back of the mobo was the 1st thing I did and they are fine.I guess that's the normal stock heatsink performance.

Did some more testing, let it run the whole night and it never got over 100°C. Also in a more realistic scenario (Skyrim with all max settings with additional graphic enhacing mods) the temperature never went over 65°C.

Will buy a new cooler just to have peace of mind, probably 212 EVO (thanks zink for the suggestion!), the next time I pass by my local pc store.

From what are you reading the temperatures? If you're using software you should know that they often report different temps. Don't forget to check temps in the BIOS itself. If it's a lot lower in the BIOS, you will need to set an offset in your monitoring software.

How am I supposed to check the BIOS temp when the system is under stress. Should I just start a stress test, quickly restart the PC and go check in the BIOS? Does it make any sense to do so, as from my experience the temperature drops very fast as soon as you end the stress test? Or there is some "smarter" way to do it?

While in the BIOS the CPU will be at higher than idle load, as OS and software dependent features and controls don't work yet in the BIOS.

My i5-3570k is at the temperature of roughly 20% load while in the BIOS. I won't know max temps, but at least a good estimate of normal usage to judge if my CPU is hotter or cooler than it should be.

OK, will try it when I get home and see if it the BIOS values are comparable to what I get in HWMonitor and Core Temp at 15-20% loads. Thank you.

The CPU temp in the BIOS is about 33-35°C, which is pretty similar to the reading I get from HWMonitor and other programs when my PC is idling.



OCCT shows pretty much the same behavior as Prime95, the temp ramps up to around 95°C with a graph that resembles a logistic function.

I guess it must definitely be that the heatsink can't keep the CPU any cooler while under full load. Will get a new cooler soon. If someone is interested I could post the temperatures with the new cooler when I get it.

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to let you know that I replaced the stock Intel cooler with a Hyper 212 EVO and did some extensive testing and the temps never went over 72°C which is about 25° lower then with the stock cooler.

I don't know if my stock cooler was defective, mounted incorrectly (even if I doubt it as I mounted it twice and everything seemed to be in order) or if it is just too weak to dissipate all the heat from a fully loaded i7.

I just did some torture testing for about 30 minutes with my I7-4770 non-K with Prime95 Blend.

Got 73c max fast then dropped to about 68c (probably cooler spun up) and turbo boost was always up, so it was running at 3.7GHz all 4 cores. Peak power consumption was 120 watts.

Max Temps in detail:

Core#0: 73
Core#1: 73
Core#2: 73
Core#3: 70

I am using Arctic Freezer I30 cooler and stock Arctic thermal paste that came with it.
