Brand New HDD noises, should I worry about it?

So I bought a 1tb WD Caviar Blue with 64mb cache from amazon, and it arrived in a plain cardboard box with 2 plastic things holding it up, no other protection what so ever. This is probably the "frustration free" packaging, which I specifically opted out of when I bought the drive because of how poorly protected it is, but they sent it like that anyway. It works, I've installed windows and some programs, but I've noticed some weird noises. Firstly, when the computer boots up it does a few grinds and clicks, but these go away after a few seconds. The drive produces a constant fairly quiet fan-like noise which I assume is normal, as they are mechanical. When the drive is "thinking" it makes some high pitched pips, and I say pips because they aren't clicks or grinds, but more like 'pip pip pip' in quick succession. Fairly quiet, and appears to be normal for hard drives to do when they "think". But the strangest of all is that, when I turn off the computer, the hard drive continues to make a high pitched whirring noise, which never stops unless I flip the switch on the PSU or on the mains plug, which makes it get gradually higher for a second and stop. I'm worried that this is due to the poor packaging, and I'm not sure whether to send it back or just accept that hard drives make noise and ignore it. But the noise when the computer is off bothers me, as I now have to switch off the mains plug as part of the routine of turning off the PC. It's as though the drive forgets to turn off when everything else does. Could someone confirm whether these noises are normal or not?

You can download a free program called speedfan :

You hard drive will have a self reporting system for errors called SMART. Speedfan will be able to read the SMART values and tell you if they are all good. It also has an in depth hard drive test under the SMART tab.

Speedfan reported either OK or nothing for everything on the list, and the online analysis told me that:
The overall fitness for this drive is 94%.
The overall performance for this drive is 97%.
It looks like it's fine then, but are they meant to be 100% for a brand new drive?

My recommendation would be to return the drive. New hard drives shouldn't make any noise.

Use the warranty replacement drive for data and buy yourself a Plextor M5P Xtreme drive. :) This is a very fast SSD drive that will take your machine to the next level.

You should be at 100%. Here is a pretty interesting recorded list of drives going bad to compare to if you feel like it.

Some new drives do make noise. I had some older Seagate drives that made a huge racket when writing data. It probably should not make more than one noise and absolutely should not continue making noise after you turn off the computer.

I buy OEM drives all the time usually from newegg and they always come in enough bubble wrap that you could play baseball with it and not hurt it. I guess Amazon does not do the same.
