Hi there,

I have a question, seeing as how I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Does powerline networking require a wireless router? I currently have a modem connected to the home computer, but I just bought a gaming computer for my room and want to know if I could just get a powerline connector to connect it to the internet. My parents don't like the idea of wifi due to younger siblings.

Thanks!

Just kidding, stupid question. I found the answer. In case anyone else is having the same troubles (which I doubt) it does require wireless internet.

No it does not require 'wireless internet'.

It just requires a cable from the router (wireless or wired only) to the powerline plug, and then another cable from the other powerline plug to the PC in question.

Modem -> router -> powerline plug -> house wiring -> other powerline plug -> PC.

The router here is the key component. The modem serves up one and only one IP address. To a PC, or to the router.
The router then serves up many internal IP addresses to various devices. These can be connected via the Powerline plugs.

Oh, wow really? Alright then, good to know. So I'd probably have to get a new modem, as far as I know, there's only one ethernet port on the back... Sorry, networking has always been confusing to me.

No, not another 'modem', but rather a router. Can be wired or wireless. But router is the word you're looking for.

Oh ok, thanks. That would probably end up being more expensive in the long run... Maybe I'll just have to do some convincing to get wifi. Thanks for your help.

You can get either a modem+router (both in one box), or just a router to hang off the existing modem.

I'd get just the router, and use the existing modem.

Oh ok, that'd work! Good idea.
