I'd think twice on an OCZ SSD

Solution
Nothing new. OCZ has been on a downhill slide for years. Mainstream news reports as well as financial news reports have been reporting OCZ's financial problems for quite some time.

I've been around for quite a few years. I remember what happened when OCZ acquired PC Power and Cooling back in 2007. At the time PC Power and Cooling had some of the best power supplies on the market. We didn't hesitate to recommend them. After the acquisition PCP&C turned into a mere shell of what it once was.

I also remember when OCZ announced plans to build a fabricating facility of their own. What OCZ never announced was that they could not get financed and had to settle for a used assembly facility which not the same as a fabrication facility. OCZ...

They have been on shaky financial ground for over a year. Even when the Vector came out and performed so well I tried to warn potential buyers of that. It will be a shame if they go under. Not many companies can compete with Samsung in performance. But no way Samsung goes bankrupt in the foreseeable future.

OCZ also announced plans to penetrate the enterprise market which is financially more lucrative than the consumer market. That never happened either.

anort3 - I agree. Samsung has done incredibly well in the OEM market. Currently they control 30% of that market thanks to contracts with Dell, Lenovo, Sony, and other "off the shelf" brands. The Micron/Intel partnership is another giant in the industry.

I have three of their drives, but none that I've purchased in the last year: 256GB Vertex4, 128GB Vertex4, and 256GB Agility4. I've been using their drives since the Apex, and they've been good drives to me. It's a shame to lose them to mismanagement.

I guess I've got to find another source. Samsung seems promising.

Johnny I have to disagree with you on the OCZ buying PC Power and Cooling being a bad thing. In fact if you really look at the power supply reviews, OCZ power supplies from 2007 and older were junk. After they bought PC Power and Cooling they turned that around to the point that I recommend both brands by name. You will be hard pressed to find a model that scores less than 9/10 from jonnyguru or gets less than a Silver award from Hardwaresecrets from either company post 2007.

This is the main reason OCZ is going broke right here. Yes it's a year old but consumers never got over it.

http://www.behardware.com/articles/881-7/components-returns-rates-7.html

" The OCZ SSDs are in last place overall but with a returns rate that is finally starting to drop. In fact, behind this rate there are some big disparities between ranges. The most popular ranges, namely the Vertex 3s and Agility 3s, do relatively well with returns of 1.51% and 2.03% respectively. Some models however have catastrophic scores and OCZ monopolizes the group of models with returns of over 5%:

- 40.00% for the OCZ Petrol 64 GB
- 39.42% for the OCZ Petrol 128 GB
- 30.85% for the OCZ Octane 128 GB SATA II
- 29.46% for the OCZ Octane 64 GB SATA II
- 9.73% for the OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB 3.5"
- 9.59% for the OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB
- 6.73% for the OCZ Vertex 2 60 GB
- 5.43% for the OCZ Agility 3 240 GB
- 5.12% for the OCZ Vertex Plus 128 GB

With returns of between 30 and 40%, the OCZ Petrol and Octane SATA II (the SATA IIIs are more reliable with, for example, 3.78% for the 128 GB) have unfortunately broken the record of the highest rates recorded since we started reporting on these stats. With such rates, we can justly classify such models as defective and it is shameful that such products have remained on sale in stores! "

anort3 - Just a very minor misunderstanding. What I meant was that once OCZ acquired PCP&C the number of psu's offered by PCP&C diminished. Currently there are 15 OCZ models and 6 PCP&C models listed at newegg.

I just happen to maintain a list of recommended psu's. Currently there are 8 OCZ models and 8 PCP&C models that are listed. Three of each brand were reviewed by jonnyGURU. The three OCZ models were manufactured by Great Wall. Two of the PCP&C models were manufactured by Seasonic. The third model was manufactured by SuperFlower:

http://www.johnnylucky.org/power-supplies/psu-recommendations.html

Scroll down to the OCZ and PCP&P sections and you'll see that I do recommend them but not all models.

A great big thank you too! Your post just reminded that it is time to update the psu recommendation list by deleting discontinued models and adding new models that were subjected to competent technical reviews.

Got ya! Yeah I have been a regular reader of your site for quite a while now. At least a couple of years. Great job! And I love the reenactment stuff! One of these days soon I would love to get out west and Tombstone has always been on the list of places to visit when I do.
