ATI driver interferes with sleep mode

I own a 3-year-old Toshiba laptop with Windows 7. I don't know if it's 32 or 64 or where to find these stats. The laptop has two performance problems, but the second is less important.

1. "Drivers are interfering with Windows resuming from sleep mode"

This driver is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series. The problem was first reported November 2010 and it’s still a problem, every day since June. Sometimes when it comes back from sleep mode, the screen will go black/back to sleep and I have to keep using the mouse to keep it awake. But then it's fine. Yet when I go to device manager, Windows says the driver is working right and has been updated. It’s the only display adapter I have! So what do I do? I don’t know what will happen if I uninstall or disable it. Help!

2. “Performance can be improved by changing visual settings.”

What settings do I change (resolution, transparency, color scheme)? I use this laptop for word processing and internet (videos, images) only. So I don’t know what’s wrong with my settings.

Solution
Have you checked the Toshiba website to see if they have a later driver for your laptop model?;

"Performance can be improved by changing visual settings"

This basically means disabling all the "eye candy" effects which eats up your system and graphics memory, leaving less for Windows & applications to use. The eye candy looks nicer but isn't necessary from a purely "get things done" point of view.

For example, you could use a basic theme instead of one of the "Aero" themes. Right-click the desktop and choose "Personalize".
