I have tried to convert my Linksys E1000 router into a repeater for my home. When I make it a client bridge the speeds are great (50 Mbps dn, 10 Mbps up) However when I make it into a repeater bridge for wireless access the download speed diminishes completely down to 0.12 Mbps while the upload stays at 10 Mbps...Why is this and what, if anything, can I do to fix this???

While worse than I would expect in your case, a repeater bridge does adversely impact speed since the repeater both receives and broadcasts on the same antenna.

You can add a cheap router configured as an AP to your E1000 in client bridge mode (with an LAN to LAN port connection) and you will not take that hit, or you can attach your E1000 with an Ethernet cable to the main router and configure it instead as a wireless AP. Either should fix the speed issue.
