Radeon 7990 vs. Radeon R9 280x in Crossfire

I've been reading around, and many people are saying that the Radeon R9 280x in Crossfire is superior to the Radeon 7990. Is this true? Why or why not?

Yes it is the 7990 is has two std 7970 cores clocked at 950MHz and 1000MHz boost, the 280X is more like the 7970GHz with core at 1000MHz and higher boost and of course there are overclocked cards while the 7990 is all reference.
