I want a better cpu on socket 775,as my current is getting outdated. Is this possible? Mainly for gaming use. Overclocking isn't a desired option
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 @Stock 2.4GHZ
MB: GA-965P-DS4
GPU:GTX 650 TI Windforce 2GB
PSU: Gigabyte SUMO 720W

It's extremely expensive, even second hand (nice to see a fellow aussie :D)

Maybe closer to holiday time i'll have money. None of the local pc stores will help with overclocking, and I have no idea about anything BIOS. Where in AUS? The heat here is causing a 45 degree idle cpu temp!

Port Macquarie with 45 degree cpu temp. Very little money atm, so a platform upgrade isn't the best option for me

The watch dogs requirements and BF4 Beta performance made me realise I need a better cpu. Also may have a slight bottleneck on the gpu. I had a 610 on this rig, and that caused issues, and also have 6GB Ram, 800 Mhz if that helps.

I'm fairly young, so just getting into hardware, first pc was a laptop, that ran things on low. Then got my current build, but with 1.9 C2D and GT210, from a friend. Then threw the quad core, and only about two month ago this sweet video card. Now High-Max current games, but near future will wreck this thing.

I felt the same way lol, had a Dell Dimension 3000 which ran games at 5fps, then got a gaming build with the E8500 and GTX 260/550 Ti (replacement). All games were playing fine until Far Cry 3 and AC3 (my goodness less than 20fps). The near future won't really wreck your build to be honest, and given how newer games still look great at medium-high settings, it won't be all that bad :D

I can max Far Cry 3 with 35 fps, but AC3 is woefully optimised. The Battlefield 4 beta ruined my pc, and I'm looking forward to watch dogs, which I barely scrape minimum.

I'm on windows 8, and had latest beta drivers. Just awful cpu optimisation. Is overclocking easy to do? And what risks are there?

Oh dear :S, overclocking is a matter of setting voltages+multipliers, offsets and stuff like that (I have no experience with it though). It's best to get an aftermarket CPU cooler and read up on overclocking guides for the stable results. A bad overclock generally causes instability I guess.

I overclocked my 610, and hit 120 degrees, as dust got caught in the fan. The only warning was the smell of dead battery. The local pc store don't overclock, so I guess that won't work.

Yeah, I would look for a Q9550. I've seen quite a few used Q9550s for a reasonable (under $125 USD), but only for domestic shipping (USA) or at best Canada.

This one is the cheapest Q9550 in Australia. It's actually a complete HP Desktop PC currently for AU $73.99. Nice to have for spare parts I suppose if it does not get bidded up too high.
