You can install it any time you want. However (and I have been finding this out myself) Linux distributions tend to have support issues with newer hardware. I have OpenSUSE 12.3 on my laptop (Dell Latitude D531) and dual-boot with Windows 7 on my desktop (in my sig below). On the laptop, it runs great. However, on my desktop, there are small, annoying issues with the wireless card, and module support for some hardware is sorely lacking.
