Internet access stopped and troubleshoot thru Windows XP says "failed to connect because Windows did not assign an IP address". Incoming cable is definitely good (checked with other computer) and device manager says the network adapter is working. Is it possible the Ethernet port is dead or corrupt and will getting a NIC to plug into a PCI slot solve the issue? Thanks.

For starters the status displayed in Device Manager is only telling you that the driver has loaded and reports no problems, it does not, and cannot tell you whether or not the hardware is functional.
