Hi,

Needed some help.

Thinking of hooking up nvidia GT 630 to Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H.

GPU requires PCIe 2.0 as mentioned here.

The mobo says something funny about PCIe slots.

Quote:
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
(The PCIEX16 slot conforms to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
* For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
* The PCI Express x16 slot supports up to PCI Express 2.0 standard when an Intel 32nm (Sandy Bridge) CPU is installed.

So is this a PCIe slot not PCIe 2.0 slot that they say works upto the same standards as 2.0? Will this work or should I just look for a motherboard with PCIe 2.0 x16 slot

Thanks!

PS: Going with Core i5 3570 with this

The mobo has a PCIE 3.0, your card is PCIE 2.0. They are different "technology" but the speed difference when using a single card would be negligible. Specially on your case that you have a gt630. You'll be fine, don't worry about it.

Why doesn't it just say PCIe 3.0 x16 then. I thought it was PCIe 1st generation. You sure its 3rd generation PCIe. The mobo is really cheap so didn't know what to make of it.

It's simple bro. Don't believe me? Here's a link from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Alright I believe you, so plug in the card to the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot or PCIe 2.0 x4?

PLUG IN THE PCIE 3.0! The higher the speed, the faster it goes. hahaha x16 > x4 bro. If you plug in your 630 in the x4 slot, you'll feel it slower.

Yeah just wanted to know if the card would work on 3.0 or if I was stuck with PCIe 2.0.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

No worries man.
PS: Your CPU is an overkill for your GPU. :)  It's a good time to upgrade bro :)

Not making a gaming rig.

Making a desktop for online poker so need a nice 4 core processor to handle programs like HM2 that perform database management (PostgreSQL) and need to read/write at a fast rate and a processor that can multi task since will need to run poker tables, HM2 and some table scanning software too.

GPU is just for basic stuff, movies etc. and probably to plug in another screen in future if I feel like I need dual screens.

On another note, do you think an AMD Phenom would be better suited for me than the one I picked?

Ohhhhhhh I see. I believe that the i5 would be better for you bro. :)  If you have the budget, go for intel. :)
