What to consider when buying a CPU fan/heatsink

Ok so the fan and heatsink has to be for the same socket the CPU is, for example for a socket 775 CPU you need a socket 775 heatsink/fan ....but what other things should be considered to know if it will work and/or fit inside the computer?

The dimensions to fit in the case, to be quiet and performance.

Many require a backing plate and either a cutout that gives easy access to the back of the motherboard or pull the motherboard to install the backing plate.
