I'm looking at buying a custom PC and have the option of a 4770K with Z87 MOBO or the i7 4930k 3.4 and Asus X Sabertooth X79 MOBO, which should I go for? Are the extra cores worth the extra cash for photo processing?

That depends a lot on the level of 'photo processing' we're talking about.

Professional level, every day all day with dozens of 30GB files? Go for the expensive one.
Hobbyist level picture taking? That's a different story, and the extra money would be hard to justify, just for 'photo processing'.

All being equal between the two machines.
Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

None of those two is a good option for the money, Photoshop depends mostly of RAM, so, with a i7-3770 or i7-3770k plus 8GB or more in RAM you are good to go. With those two components you will get an excellent performance in that program.

Thanks for your replies. And apologies, I'm new to forums and not sure of the protocol here.
I was looking to add 32GB Quad-DDR3 2400HZ memory to this set up as well. My current system, i7 4770 with 16GB RAM struggles. I'm shooting RAW with a 36 mega pixel camera so my Photoshop files are large and I'm frequently editing several photos at the same time. I realise Photoshop will eat as much RAM as you can throw at it and had heard that the graphics card was not such a big deal so was going to stick with a 2GB GTX660. I'll be adding a 240gb SSD and 2TB SATA. Budget isn't that much of an issue as I am processing on a pro level.

Yeah, GPU for photoshop isn't that much of a big deal, unless you start talking about video editing.

I'd say add another 16GB kit of RAM to your current system, and see how it preforms. If its stable, than great. If it still lags, I'd recommend upgrading to X79, but try that.

Make sure the 16GB kit is the same as the one you have in your system at the moment.

Thank you, I'll give that a go.
