I'm trying to decide whether it would be better to upgrade my cpu from the x4 980 BE and get either the newest AMD processors or make the switch to Intel (whichever is within my budget) or to get a newer GPU (currently have 7850).

The CPU shouldn't bottleneck that GPU. Maybe slightly.. is it overclocked?

It will depend heavily on the game. For the most part, the CPU will be fine and the 280x will be about equal to the CPU.

If you have a mobo that supports the FX processors, I suppose it can be a cheap upgrade.
