I just got a new router (Netgear Nighthawk). I can connect to the internet with no problems, however, Windows 7 does not acknowledge the connection (the icon in the system tray shows not connected and there is a big red X when I look in the network and sharing center) How can I fix this issue?

Nope, tried the more obvious stuff first including downloading a new driver.

Yes, have two smartphones, two iPads, another laptop, and two kindles. Everything is working just fine except Windows 7 won't recognize that I am connected.

Sorry but sometimes these problems have the most silly solutions.
I have some thoughts of might what it could be the problem here. And it is not the router since it can provide internet to other systems. So the problem lies to your PC and since the windows cannot see it, it might be a Firewall's fault.
Have you checked the firewall settings?

Also if firewall is not the problem, then try this tutorial:
Can't Connect to the Internet?
It has a lot of suggestions to what might troubles you.

I have had to call in an expert - nothing has worked, including clearing the registry entries. I've waved the white flag and called a technician to see if they fare better. Thank you so much for all your advice and the quick responses.

No prob. I feel a little bad that couldnt help better.
Anyway take care :).
