Hi,

I'm considering building this machine in Nov/Dec, however, I don't know what kind of cooling to pick or what kind of motherboard. I would appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Also, since this will be the first machine I've ever built, if you see anything wonky or off with my build, please feel free to make suggestions and recommendations. I appreciate the help.

The build is as follows:

You might find the Maximus VI Hero to be too much for your needs so I stand by my recommendation for the Extreme 6, if you find that to be to have too much bells and whistles, then you might want to consider the Extreme 4.

And yes, if you don't OC too much, and if you don't want to tweak voltages, then yes, the H100i and the NH-D14 would be too much for you. The Hyper 212 is good cooler, known for its price:performace, but I'd like to present these alternatives:

Mobo: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z87extreme4

Coolers:
(Air) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhd14
(Water) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhd14

Noctua's NH-D14 is an air cooler that is on an entirely different level, so much so that it competes with water coolers. However, the bulk of that thing and its installation in a rig makes it a challenging choice for new system builders which I why I listed the H100i as well.

You didn't indicate prices for any of these parts so I had free rein over the parts' prices.

As far as price is concerned, I don't want to cheap out on the cooling or the MOBO. I want something that works and has a nice feature set. On the other hand, I don't want to over pay for features I may never use (for example, I'm not sure if I will be OCing too much) but I would like to have the possibility of Crossfire/SLI in the future.

Is the H100i overkill if I don't OC much?
