I'm new to building a pc from scratch. I've been doing some research, but I'm unsure of which components to use. Basically, I want a strong machine for playing World of Warcraft on the Ultra settings, and probably some first person shooters. I would like the system to run quietly, so I have been looking at liquid cooling. I am leaning toward an i7-3770k or 3930k for the CPU, and a GeForce GTX780 for the graphics card.

So, to my questions:

1. Am I on track for a good CPU/graphics card combination?

2. If so, what would be the best motherboard to go with? I'd like to have two SSD's and a conventional hard drive.

3. Will air cooling be enough for such a system? Should I go to liquid?

4. For gaming, is there any benefit to having a sound card?

1. They are decent choices for the CPU/GPU combo, but having a GTX 780 jus to play WoW and some FPS games is overkill. You could save your self a lot of money by downgrading to a GTX 770 or even a GTX 760, unless you also want to take in mind AMD's recent price drops on their graphics cards.
2.What type of motherboard do you want to have? Full, Mini, or Micro ATX?
3. If you get yourself a nice aftermarket heatsink and some good quality case fans you should be fine, but if you have the money, I would add in a liquid cooler for your CPU and then slap in some good case fans and you should be set to go.
4. Not exactly to sure, I am not that familiar with sound cards.

Oh man imo you're kind of overdoing it. I mean if you have the money go ahead but for WoW and other games I don't really think i7 is that necessary but once again if you have the money and you're willing to by all means go ahead. Personally i5-4670k is enough for me, and I'm running GTX770 4GB in hopes to run BF4 in ultra setting. Also, liquid cooling is not really needed unless you are planning to overclock. Just get a decent air cooler, I have a $30 range CM hyper 212 plus and it runs quietly. And as for sound card, I don't really care for game sound quality, but if you do go for it.

Need to decide on a CPU and a platform the 3770K is on the 1155 mobos, and the 3930K is up over on the 2011 socket, X79 platform, Then in one response the 4670K is mentioned, it's on socket 1150 the newer Haswell one - what's your budget for CPU and mobo - otherwise you and everybody else is going to be running all over everywhere

Your needs are the same as mine. I play WoW mixed in with the odd fps. I have the i5 4670k and a gtx 770 and play on ultra settings.

Answers to your questions:
1. I'd say build a haswell system. The i5-4670K is a better choice for you (over the i7). There will be no performance increase in going with an i7 over the i5. For the graphics card, the 780 is a monster. I'd wait for now though, as prices will be dropping soon. If you don't want to wait, take a look at the r9 280x. It performs similarly to my 770, but is $100 cheaper. If you have the cash, go for the 780, you won't be disappointed either way.

2. The Asus vi Hero is a great motherboard. I have the VI Gene version as I went microATX and Love it.

3. I personally went with closed loop liquid cooling. I chose the H100i and would recommend it. I did however swap out the stock fans it comes with with some quieter fans. Closed loop vs. air is a debate, you'll get varied opinions on it, and both are valid. I like closed loop not only for the performance, but for the aesthetics as well. I have an open window case, and it is easier to have a good looking system with closed loop imo. The H100i performs on par with high end air coolers.

4. Not really, unless you have really high end headphones/speakers. It also depends on the motherboard you get, but most high end motherboards have decent built in sound. The one I recommended has great sound, maybe the best for integrated.

Hope this helps!

His budget seems to be high since he's trying to purchase i7 & gtx 780. lol

1. The CPU is overkill stick to socket 1150/87 a i5 4670k will do the trick for you sir. The GPU you have is a good card however I would say depending on which FPS we are talking about you may not find yourself in a position where the money is worth it. If we are talking about BF4 then yes a 780 would be a good investment for good high end settings and then if you wanted to be open for the new mantle tech then perhaps waiting for the 290x to come out would be a good option as well on the high end tier end of things.

2. With current motherboards you'll find that their isn't much done with them anymore much of what is handled on the motherboard side in the past is now on the CPU. I would recommend boards such as the MSI Z87 GD-65 its a highly regarded board amongst reviews also you could go with a ASRock Z87 Extreme4 as two examples of more then capable boards.

3. Air cooling at this point is really really good something like Noctua NH-D14 will be more then sufficient. Otherwise I'd recommend a AIO water cooler like the H100i and then I would purchase two Noctua NF-F12 PWM fans they are premium fans however given how much you look to spend I'd say you could afford it normally you'll see them around 16-25 dollars a fan but they are worth it.

4. For gaming their isn't a benefit to a sound card. I have a sound card personally because having a dedicated sound card provides a stronger sound to me then onboard audio however what I would advise first is see if the sound is good enough to you and then go from their. If you were looking at a pair of headphones that needed a dedicated amp that would change things then yes you would want a sound card.

Budget may be high, but why waste our time, if OP has no idea what is what, cna suggest things till blue in the face only to hear, well, I think I want to change to 2011, or 1150, and then to 1155, needs to do at least a little research

As far as my budget, I was wanting to limit my budget to $2000 to $2500 (per machine). I'm actually going to be building two machines, one for me and one for my wife. I'd like these machines to remain viable for at least a couple years of gaming, at least CPU-wise... I can always upgrade the video cards.

If nothing requireing Hyper threading would look to the 4670K (Haswell), a good mobo like the Asus Hero, looking for a couple or three or more years would go ahead and Get 16GB of DRAM in 2x8GB suggest the GSkill Tridents, the 780 is a great GPU, might look at the Asus model or depending on when you want to jump, wait and see wht the new Radeon 290X GPUs come out at (think they'll be the same price roughly) or see what happens with nVidia, expect a 770TI and 780TI version very soon, then their 8XX line of GPUs in 1st quarter of 2014, good CPU cooler would be the Hyper 212 EVO, about $35, of if planning big OCs or running 24/7 look to the Phantek or CM GTS V8 cooler (which is great!) - for Cases I like the HAF models, on drives for SSDs look at Samsung, and I prefer WD for platter type dives

For $2500, you should be able to build both you and your wife's computer and still be able to max out almost all the current games and games in the future. I would highly suggest going with a i5 4670k and either a GTX 770 or a Radeon 7970. As for what brand, Gigabyte, MSi, etc are all pretty good companies
