External hard drive data recovery

Hello, I have a toshiba external hard drive which was functioning properly yesterday, but today it won't work. When i plug it in it just won't read. I get a message that says that the drive needs to be formatted and i opened the properties and it says that the hard drive state is RAW or something like that. My question is, If i try to recover my files with a data recovery tool from the internet and it fails or i can't do it, would that further mess up the hard drive to the point that it could have been saved by an experienced technician but somehow by trying that tool i messed it up?

Thank you.

Tahnks! another question, there is another tool similar but it only recovers up to 2gb unless you buy the full version. will the same happen with the one you recomended?
  3. A full version will be needed. Free version will allow you to recover 1GB.

However, you can look for some free data recovery softwares too.

Check here for some free data recovery softwares: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm

Try with the one which is suitable for your need.

Last question I promise. In the case that i get one of those that recover a certain amount of data. can the process be performed again or the recovery of data is a one time kinda thing?
  5. Yes, you can perform the recovery process again and again(until you have enough storage to save your recovered data, in other drive).

There is also testdisk which I've been using for years and it is completely free. There are two recovery methods, testdisk which can be used to find specific files and recover partitions and partition tables. The other is photorec which simply looks for anything unless you specify what you want copied, on the page that you select the partition to search under file options you can select what it should search for.

I keep a copy on a live linux just so I can recover for anyone anywhere anytime.

It sounds like that your drive is corrupted. You should try to format it for fixing this problem.
But, to recover your original data, you are supposed to run a hard disk recovery software at first and format this disk afterwards for saving the physical drive. This one can retrieve your data completely as it helps my friend restore all his data. Go get it there: http://goo.gl/wQW0Ur
Add some tips: You should not rewrite your wanted data with any new file in case of data loss.
You should back up your important data all the time on a different drive in the future.
    Hope it works.
