What should I do to stop my PC from freezing?

Hello, my PC keeps freezing at random points (usually under heavy load, and sometimes when idle for long periods of time).

I've tried lowering the CPU temperature with a larger heat-sink, running Memory Diagnostic, re-seating components, and clearing out any dust in my chassis.

Here's my specs:

MoBo: Asus A5M97 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-4100 (stock: 3.6ghz, OC'd to 4.2ghz)
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB)
GPU: NVidia Geforce GTX 650
HDD: 2x7200rpm SATA 3.0 WD (500GB, 1TB) [No RAID]
Optical Disk: 1 DVD-RW/DVD+RW (I think that is the correct jargon)
Extra fans: 2x 120mm LED @ ~1440rpm
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 500W (this is non-modular)

Thank you!

Have you tried returning the CPU to stock speeds? If so, does it still freeze?

Thank you,
Stock speeds were freezing my computer before I overclocked. I just underclocked to 2.8ghz (instead of stock 3.6, OC 4.2). So far applications are running smoother (longer load times for various events).

Does this mean that my power supply is under heavy load? If so, what should I do to fix this?

Since its freezing sometimes at idle, it could be various things. I'd start with running a HDD scan, you can use checkdisk that comes in windows. I'd leave the CPU at stock for now, just so we can be sure that CPU settings are not an issue.

Ran chkdsk of my C: drive and found nothing.

EDIT: Power supply does not output enough power. Narrowed everything down to this being the problem. Thanks, Martell1977 for the help!
