I do have following problem. I bought new GPU to upgrade from my well served Ggigabyte 5850 HD. With the new Battlefield on the way I decided to buy Asus Matrix Platinum R9 280X. I heard that they card is 30% cooler and the level of noise is reduced to 20%.
I paid more than the reference card but I thought that this will be worth investment.
Before my new card arrived I made sure that my PSU will be sufficient to power it. I had Energon 750W (later I released that it actual output was 650W only). Imagine my surprise when my PC shutdown without a reason. Well I gues there was a reason behind this, miss advertised output on PSU. It servel well with 5850 HD but it is not enough for a new GPU.
I bought a new PSU, after finding out that this forum that it is a good model worth getting.
(XFX 850W XXX edition). I plugged everything in and it is working great ! The PC is not shutting down anymore.
The problem which I have now regards high temperatures which I am getting while playing Battlefield 3 at ultra. This game is pushing my card to its limits. When I had 5850 HD my max temperature inside my case was around 37 degrees. Now its is reaching 52 degrees after 40 minutes of playing.
It is making my GPU fans to spin at 100%. It is really loud, like someone would turn the vacuum cleaner on.
What options do I have to reduce the temperature by 10 degrees. My current case have two extra fans ( I think they might be quite weak). One is at the back and the other one is on the side. I would like to have some solution which would not require replacing PC case.
I find it hard to believe that the GPU should be working so loud. The problem might be poorly ventilated case. It is medium size and the GPU is taking a loads of space, as a matter of fact after I installed it, it has only left 2 mm space before the metal frame for peripherials.
Is it possible to make a hole in the side plastic case cover and mount an extra fan in to improve the air flow?
Do you have any ideas guys? I would like to reduce the temperature inside my case by 7-10 degrees. Will mounting better fans help me achieve this?
Thank you for looking into my posts !!!

Cable management and 120mm fans and if possible a very large fan above the cpu and ram sockets on the roof (possible for dual 120mm's) - these should assist in creating a decent vacuum of air flow. Another thing to consider would be thermal paste, tomshardware just had a real good couple of segments on that. It is worth a look at.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-heat-sink-heat-spreader,3600.html - the first
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-performance-benchmark,3616.html - the second

P.S. goodluck high five, let us know how you go

This is my case

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ANKERMANN-3-50GHz-GeForce-M5A78L-M-Professional/dp/B007I7H1IM/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1382553310&sr=1-6&keywords=ankermann-pc

I have exactly the same. What I noticed is that when the side case cover is slightly opened and the little side fan which you can see on the pic is blowing air at the gpu, the gpu temperature dropped from 87 to 80 (when playing Battlefield) - I am using Asus Matrix Platinum GPU Tweak applciation. The Gpu fan is not spinning like crazy and the sound level dropped by half.
The temperature inside my case is still showing 52.7 but when I stop playing the temperature quickly goes down to 30.
If I would replace little side fan with this one and maybe add another one would that sort the problem. The one I was looking at is

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/120mm-noctua-nf-f12-pwm-focused-flow-pwm-cooling-fan-quiet

Would you recommend using this model as the main back fan too?

Thanks for looking into my threat.

My current case do have a side fan. It is just a small one. Yes buying a new case would definitly solve the problem.
The problem is that I blown my budget on the GPU and new PSU so I can not buy new case right now. I have few pounds left for new fan and some home made case modification.
Will inside components survive those sort of temperatures?

hrrrrrrm until you get enough cash for a new tower, it might actually help the ambient temperature if you remove the clear panel side off the tower. Assuming the environment is generally colder than the inside of the tower (and the environment is safe to do so) you should get lower avg and highest temperatures - however just be careful of your new baby, wouldn't want something to go wrong with the side off :p (EG keep anything with liquid away from the pc while the side is off)

Not a great response, but it should (*should*) do the trick till you have more money :p

since you upgraded your GPU, you are getting more heat inside your case. the issue is not with the fans themselves, the issue is with the cooling solutions this case can provide, replacing the fans will not result in a meaningful difference, (you will notice some difference but is doesn't worth it).

with your currently limited budget, your best option as what Darren Kitchin said, open the side panel.

when you are able to get a new case, there are some good quality case but still cheap, like this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0064LFTR8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
or other similarly priced cases.

Hi you might both be right. Adding new fans is just unnecessary expense. I might as well add the money I would spend on new fans to the new case.
I really like the case you found for me. It does not only look good but has 4 fans which would help with cooling the whole system down.
Ideally I would like to find a case with a glass side or honeycombed side wall which would let you see the inside of the PC.
Do you know any cheap cases. I found one but on over clockers site. Do you think this would be suitable?
It has six fans, little more expensive than you find and not so good looking but it should guarantee good airflow.

I would have to check whether my mainboard would fit. Also I am unfamiliar with the cases where PSU is mounted at the bottom. I can not picture this. Also will my mainboard fit this case. I have:

Asus P7H57D-V EVO

Thanks for the tip. I will await your reply with regards to the suitable case and start saving money.

Can I still play Battlefield 3 or do I risk damaging the card. When I was playing it yesterday the recorded temperature was 80 degrees.

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it would be better if I save some money to buy a new case rather than put money towards new fans which will not eliminate the problem.
Do I need to take both side covers off, and what about the side fan which is currently cooling down GPU heat sinks? Can it be where it is. I can lean the side panel on the case under slight angle so it could till blow air at the GPU.
Thank you for suggestion. Once I find good case with glass side and good number of fans I will post an update.
If you know any good cases I would be much obliged if you could recommend some to me.
Visually I would be looking for something like this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-076-XG&groupid=2362&catid=2277

It does not have display at the front to show me current temperature but I cannot find one with display.
Also I am quite puzzled about the PSU position. Will my mainboard fit?
I have Asus P7H57D-V EVO .
Thanks again !

This one also is quite sweet:
Please tell me what do you think:

This one looks like a decent case. I think I am leaning towards this. I have also checked the youtbe videos and mounting all the components look quite easy.

Contender : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zalman-Z9-Plus-Midi-Tower/dp/B004FPQL0E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382639729&sr=8-1&keywords=Zalman+Z9+Plus+Tower+Case

I am waiting for your opinions. I would never expect that buying new GPU will force me to buy so many other components (like new PSU; case etc). I will have to remember this next time I decide to replace GPU.

Yeah those look pretty alright, generally just go for something where you can have more fan outtake then intake. EG 1-2 (120mm) fans front pulling air in, 1 (120mm) fan side pulling air in, 1-2 (120mm) fans back pulling air out, 2x120 or 200+mm top fan pulling are out.

And when you setup your new case see if you can't make your cable job as tidy as possible, that should help a lot to with your airflow and temperature management.

If you take the side of the tower off of your current pc, your tower should start to A) make the room's ambient temp go up AND B) your tower's ambient temp remain similar to room temperature but slightly higher (as it is the source of the heat increase).
I'll never forget when I was young and some of my awesome 80m fans died - sides of the tower removed and a rotating swivel stand fan was used to keep air moving out of the tower :p Room used to get so warm.

Darren Kitchin pretty summed it up.

focus on cooling options and get the case you like, a mid tower case is enough to house your Mobo (your mobo size/form factor is is ATX).
clean the case too, it will catch some dust.
keep an eye for deals and discounts.

good luck.

Hi !
My new case arrived and I put all the components to their new house. I decided to go with Zalaman Z9 Pus (4 fan version) as I heard lots of good things about this case.
Thank you for helping me to solve my overheating problem. The new case work great ! The inside temperature has gone down by 30 degrees (at heavy load). When playing BF 3 at ultra the GPU temp went down by 17 degrees, by 10 when playng BF 4 at ultra.
GPU is quiet now, the only thing I hear is the noise of the fans and HDD, it bearable though.
My idle PC temp is usually between 17-21 degrees. At heavy load the PC gets to 25 degrees which is a massive improvent. I was gettint 55 degrees before case replacment.
I am really please now. Thanks for your help !

Hi,

I just thought that I will give you quick update. My new Zalaman Z9 Plus arrive.
This def fixed the overheating problem. The PC temp went down by 30 degrees, the GPU by 17 degrees ( massive improvment).
I tried to be tidy with cable management and its looking really cool. Most of the cables have been hiddden behind side panel. I love my new case and I am glad that overheating problem has gone away.
When I was connecting the fans, two of them did not work when connected to front case cables, I fixed that by connecting them straight to mobo.
Now all 4 fans are keeping my PC between 17-21 at idle and between 23-26 at heavy load.
Many thanks for you help !
