external hdd to new pc not working via usb

my old pc's graphics card died with lots of photos etc not backed up. Ive purchased a case for the old hdd and fitted it inside. Ive connected the hdd to my new pc running win XP but the drive is not showing up in the my computer section. Any ideas? Im desperate to get almost all my family photos off.

  1. Check in Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.
The drive may be listed there with no drive letter and perhaps with the word "Raw" for it's description.

Right-click it and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths".
    Click "Add".
    Accept the default letter.
    Click 'OK'.
  2. Thanks. Tried this and unfortunately its not in list. The only option displayed is the C: drive and nothing else. Tried plugging into other USB slots too-no joy
  3. Is the external drive case powered? if so are you sure that its getting power? (some have an on/off switch) Can you feel the drive spin up when you power it on?
