Multiple Different GPU (non SLI/XFIRE) Pushing High Resolution

My goal in the future is to switch out my 1080p resolution monitors and move up to 1440p. I plan to run 3 monitors and 1 TV on the side. I don't play games in SLI/Xfire and I don't ever intend to. I generally only play on the middle screen and have other things running on my other 2 screens.

Currently, I use a GTX 670 FTW, which powers 3x 1080p monitors + 1 1080p TV perfectly fine. However, when I up the resolution to 1440p on 3 monitors, I am thinking the graphics card would have a harder time pushing the higher resolution.

Would it be an issue to simply purchase a second card like a 770 GTX? Putting the monitor used for gaming + 1 other on the 770, and the 3rd monitor + TV on the 670? I don't plan on running nVidia and AMD together, but I'd also like to not have to purchase 2 high end cards since I don't plan on SLI/XFIRE.

Would this be an issue? I've never ran multiple GPUs before.

Yes you can run 2x gpu's independently with no problems, but why are you wanting to run like this, what are you hoping to gain. Having things running on your other screens while gaming really doesnt take much power from the video card at all (I run 4 monitors from my amd 7950). If you are wanting more power for gaming (yes gaming at 1440p will take more power) you would get more of a gain leaving your monitors plugged in the way they are and adding a second 670 in SLI. This will double your video power and still allow you to run your monitors the same, vs simply moving your other monitors to another card but still having the same amount of video power in the end.

I get what you mean about just adding another card for SLI. Problem is, at the time I purchased my 670 FTW, I acquired it at a certain price. When I build a new comp down the road, I will have a hard time finding the 670 FTW at a reasonable price due to low supply. It would make more sense to just buy a 7XX card or 8XX card by then.

I was under the impression pushing 1440p, 1600p, or higher would require a lot more graphics processing power, since the cards are not capable of pushing that many high resolution monitors off a single card? I understand 1080p is doable as I'm doing it now.

Yes you need more power for higher resolutions, but thats mostly during gaming. During every day tasks on the desktops, the difference in power between the new card and old card wont be noticeable. If another 670 doesnt make sense budget wise then yes, your plan will work just fine. You can add in pretty much any new graphics card, run it as primary and still use the 670 as a secondary card.
