I am going to go ahead and take the dremel tool to my old E310 and open up the end of the PCI-e x1 slot so I can put a much less expensive PCI-e x16 card in it. I realize that it will be sorely limited, but for now so be it. I only play older stuff anyway. My question is what is the absolute best older/newer pci-ex16 card that will work, (for gaming), with my system. The Hd 5670 has been recommended, but wondering what else might work that may be a little better. Thanks

An HD 5670 will be fine, you can try a 6570 or a 6670 also.

Get 2GB more RAM, if you can. That will increase the performance in everything.

Thanks for the responses. Was also wondering about an older HD 3850, or HD 3870x2 in comparison to the 5670, 6570, or 6670? Also, re: power consumption, I have a 375 watt psu, so I think that the 3850, and 3870x2 would require that I get a bigger power supply.

3870x2 takes a lot of power, are loud and reach high temps and your psu would be at the limit, the other cards would not be a problem, if your PSU quality is good. For the right GPU I can`t say anything since I am not that much informed about the older CPU`s.

3870x2 would have worse performance than a 5670 on anything that doesn't have crossfire support. My gramps has a 4870x2 and the performance from a single 4850 is minimal.
Also the 3870x2 uses tons of power, creates a ton of heat, and is probably more trouble than its worth.

Also afaik the 5670 does not require auxilliary power and should work with your current setup, as you would need to also upgrade your PSU for a 3870x2 to at least 450W.

Is there going to be a big difference between the 5670 and the 6670? I did some comparing on some other sites, and got mixed opinions. Thanks

the 6670 is the newer "replacment" for the 5670, Its performance is minimally better over the 5670, it runs a bit cooler, uses a little less power, and its drivers will be supported for a bit longer than the hd 5xxx series.

That would also work fine, but your current system would bottleneck it tremendously. I wouldn't get this card unless you're planning on building a new system in the near future.

I missed out on the GTX 465. Probably go with a 6670. Do I need to go with a low profile, or would that only be necessary if i were to scrap the cutting part, and use the Startech pci-e x1 to pci-e x16 riser/adapter?

I'm not understanding what you're saying here, is your computer like the SC440 where it has a peice of plastic in the physical pcie slot preventing usage of a normal card? If so yes, you can take that out safely with a box cutter.

It does not matter if the card is low profile or not, unless you really want to use that riser card in which case your bus speed will suffer.
