I have an older Compaq Presario and the HP website says I can upgrade the stock Pentium 4 631 in my Alhena5 mobo to a Pentium D series Presler so I'm thinking about the Pentium D 630 with the same 3.0 clock speed as the Pentium 4. My question is since the Pentium D has somewhat higher power consumption do I need to think about upgrading my HSF as well or will the stock HSF suffice. Thanks for anyone's input. Matt.

So what your saying is I need to get myself a stock Pentium HSF or equivalent along with the Pentium D 630 I'm upgrading to to be o.k.? Maybe you misunderstood? At present I don't have a stock Pentium D HSF...just the stock one for the Pentium 4 631.

There is no Pentium D 630. There is a Pentium 4 630. A Pentium D will be an 830 or 930.
The Pentium D is literally 2 x Pentium 4 chips on the same die. They ran very hot and came with a better heat sink than the Pentium 4 did.
You are not going to see a big difference doing this. Single threaded performance will remain the same. The Pentium 4 / Pentium D Netburst chips are the CPUs Intel would like to forget about. They were not very good even when new and they have been obsolete since 2006. A modern netbook with a 1.4Ghz processor is faster than a Pentium D at 3Ghz.

Yes I meant to say Pentium D 930...Presler series. I'm just trying to upgrade the computer a little bit for my mom. So what you're saying is replacing the Pentium 4 with the Pentium D won't make that much if any difference as far as performance like the rate at which web pages load or appear on her screen using dsl high speed internet?
Maybe a little. Not enough to spend more than a little money on. Make very sure the Pentium D 930 is supported. The BIOS will have to support it. The chips both being LGA 775 is not enough.
Honestly a very low end netbook/notebook would be many times faster than you could ever make a computer that old. Everything from the hard drives to the memory are obsolete on that Pentium system. A faster CPU is only part of how a system handles data.
