will resolution cause problem for graphics card

my friend was saying that my resolution, 1680x1050 could bottleneck a r9 280x. he was saying i would be getting the same fps as a r9 270x because of that, is he right and is it worth the extra $100 for future proofing

Not true, even with a bit less resolution like you have, Crysis would still bring a 280x to its knees with settings turned up. You'll be getting more frames than you can use most the time, true, but with newer games that will less and less true. a 270x will get you high/ultra with current games on that resolution, but then will have to be turned down with some of the new games just coming out probably. If you had a 270x and then later upgraded to 1920x1080 and were trying to play BF4 or something, you'd wish you had the 280x. It's up to you on if it's worth it, are you going to bump the resolution up any time?
