Hi,

I'm doing my very first PC build, to improve over my old HP pavilion. I'm still deciding if I should customize and ship, or ship and build it myself (with assistance of course). I'm trying to lean this to about 1.5K with peripherals, but it isn't working out for me, since I want to "future proof" (Get everything I need now).

Parts:
CPU: Intel i7 4700K
Case fans: Maximum Enermax 120mm
Cooling: Asetec 550LC Dual fans (Push-Pull)
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-K
Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 780/AMD Radeon 7990 (Need serious help)
PSU: Depending on Video Card
Optical Drive: Lg 12x Blu-ray Combo Drive
Storage: 128 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD +2TB Seagate Barracuda
Sound card: I'm clueless
Case: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1852569/good-mid-tower-cases.html

Peripherals:
Headphones: Razer Kraken Pro
Keyboard: Need a cheap, but good one (Use CyberPowerPC standard keyboard for reference)
Mouse: Same as Keyboard (Use CyberpowerPc again)
Speaker: : Logitech 210

Anything excessive? Needs improving?
I'm probably going to be stubborn on improvements, which is why it's expensive. Thanks!

the 780 is an awesome gpu, just really really overpriced. part of the reason i'm suggesting you wait is it's really about 200 too expensive right now.

if the r9-290x isn't all that good you probably should look into something like 2 7950s in xfire or 2 760s in sli... much better bang for your buck then a 780
yeah... mmm... here i'll see what i can build for you. Now understand the 7990 is just a standin until the R9-290X comes out (tomorrow it should be on sale). I expect the r9-290X to come in at cheaper then that 7990; likely $50-$100 cheaper. That will be the suggested gpu for your build (not the 7990).

Wow, I like it. But (since I'm stubborn), will the i5 still beat the 4770k in performance for gaming? Is there much of a difference between G. Rip Jaws X and Mushkin? I'll morph this so it fits my needs, but still, thanks. Just for reference, I'll be playing BF3, BF4, Far Cry 3 (and blood dragon), Bioshock Inf, and DMC: Devil May Cry. Can the 7990 handle them at 60+ FPS without stutter and annoying noise? Will a sound card be necessary? Sorry for the questions. Thanks

that muskin redline is and has been the fastest ram THG has benched for the last 2 years running... beating out even higher clocked ram

the i5 will be identical to the i7 in gaming... a few titles like crysis 3 and bf4 not withstanding, the difference isn't all that much even in those fully threaded titles. i just don't think hyperthreading is worth an extra $100

I don't want you to buy the 7990... i want you to get the r9-290x... which should be a little cheaper ($50-$100) and at the same time faster then the 780 and about as fast as the Titan.

:p Forgot that games rely more on GPU than CPU. Thanks for answering. I like your idea on the r9, but since I have no benchmarks (atleast ones that aren't leaked), I'm a little iffy on getting it. What about sound cards? Does the motherboard support SLI and Xfire (just in case I switch to NVIDIA)? Thanks a bunch

the r9-290x should be released, as well as reviews in the next 12 hours or so. so we'll know more then. but if it's all that it's cracked up to be i think it's a no brainer.

As for sound cards, all computers come with a pretty solid onboard sound card. that asrock is no exception. generally unless you're a serious audiophile i doubt you'll be able to tell the difference from an onboard card and a discrete one.

and yes, that motherboard supports both sli and xfire.

Thanks! I'm changing Peripherals to fit gaming. As for the r9, if it isn't cracked up, would you recommend switching to the GTX 780? If so, what cooling would fit it? Thanks a bunch for the help btw

Thanks for all your help. I'm very new and appreciate your experience. If the worst case scenario just so happens to appear, then what cooling would you recommend for the new cards? The same? Again, thanks. You've certainly earned the title for "PC economist" IMO

haha. well, usually the non-standard non-blower coolers are best. the blower style coolers work really well, they're just really loud. the Asus Direct CUII lineup tends to be quiet, cool and cheap, if you want to spend a premium the gigabyte windforce lineup or the msi lightning family of cards both perform as good as the asus (they just tend to be more expensive)
