Short story

Overclocked my 780gtx. Only adjusting clock speed and benchmarking in between each change. No artifacts or crashes but BF3 had fps drops after this. Can this kind of overclocking cause damage.

Long story

I recently had a little go at overclocking my 780. It was mainly in an attempt to match a factory overclocked 780 my friend had. It was my first time overclocking so i was pretty careful.

Long story short i was upping the clock speeds by about 20 and then benchmarking (Firestrike 3dmark). Did this quite a few times until i was up to about +150 clock speed. Still didnt notice any crashes or artifacts. Although the higher i went the less benefit it gave me on my 3DMark score. Once i got to +150 and it stopped drastically improving i figured i had to up to the voltage to get any more outta the card. I decided to air on the side of caution and stop as i have heard damage can happen when messing with voltages (Especially if you don't know what you are doing)

Did a few more benchmarks still no artifacts or crashing. I then reset my card back to normal. I double and triple checked all overclocks where away using some other programs.

I then loaded up Battlefield 3 and for the first few minutes of gameplay my fps where all over the place. Going from around 120 (The usual) down to maybe 30-40. It stabilized after a few minutes but it had me worried.

So i thought i would come here and ask can you cause damage to the card while only adjusting the clock speed. Does this sound like an issue to do with overclocking ? Is it possible that the overclock lingered for a few minutes before everything went back to normal and that caused these irregularities.

I have played a few games since then and when i join into a game for the first few seconds i get a similar issue. My game lags a bit for maybe 5-10 seconds but not as much as the first time it happened.

Sorry thought i mentioned that. I have 6 chassis fans, along with watercooling for the CPU and the Palit 780 Jetsteam has 3 80mm fans on it. Temps didn't go above 60 had all chassis fans set to max while testing just to make sure :p
