Buy a 290X as soon as possible, or wait?

Hi, I'm looking to get one of the new Radeon cards when they drop. The thing is, I don't want to buy it as soon as they're released but if I need to I will. Will they be available closer to the holidays late November early December or are they going to sell out the first 10 minutes of release? xD

Thanks! :)

A reference cooler is a design specified by the GPU manufacturer. Generally it does a decent job but can be loud when under stress and usually doesn't support overclocking.

Later models of the GPU may have minor tweaks to the layout of the actual components on the board, which can improve temps, stability, and longevity.

I think they will sell out quickly. But I have learned to wait, and buy a later revision of the hardware. This way, any issues can be worked out and you may get a board that is easier to overclock and will possibly last longer. They are supposed to be available at the end of this month though.

You better wait. See whats the word for the cards.Who knows they might not be as good as they supposed to be or they might have issues with hardware/software. Its new technology.

Plus i think that Nvidia will release their new cards at November or something.

Wait untill till late December or so...

Right now we are waiting for AMD to pull the trigger on releasing them out to the public. I know there is an NDA right now holding back the benchmarks from being released, so we will have to wait and see. With that said, I'm sure we will be having R9 290x's out here quite soon. AMD won't want to miss the holiday sales on the "new" GPU's (renamed and slightly tweaked from previous gen).

Well, the 290/290x truly are new chips. But the 280x and below are rebadged 7000 series cards with some tweaks.

That is what we are hearing/reading. I forgot to mention that the 290/290x would probably be a different chip, but might be on the same design/architecture. We will see as soon as the NDA lifts and we get a real look at the GPU.

I'm sorry, I'm sort of a noob to computers, but what is a reference cooler, and what is the difference when later models of the GPU come out?

Oh ok, thanks. How long does it take for improved versions of a GPU take?

I was going to bite the bullet and just get a reference card, but seeing as they sold out so quick I'll just wait for a non reference to come out. :)

Good idea and you should get a better cooling option with the other Non-referenced cards!
