Worth it to upgrade to windows 8.1? Heard it was better for frame rates/ fun to use. Any input would be welcome. im torn between keeping 7 or upgrading.

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 in August, then 8.1 last week and I love it. I mostly game and I haven't had any problems with 8. BF4 actually performs better on 8 so it's likely that future games will too. I say go for it.

I got the full version of Win8 Pro which was around $200. I don't think you can currently upgrade from Windows 7 straight to 8.1 yet but you will get 8.1 for free when you upgrade from 7 to 8. Windows 8 upgrade is around $75 and Windows 8 Pro upgrade is around $90. I had no compatibility issues whatsoever and I got more FPS during the BF4 beta than Windows 7 users with similar specs to my PC.

I've only had a few red screens while playing BF3 but recent updates have fixed it. I haven't had any gaming issues with 8.1 at all. The whole Punkbuster system can be a pain sometimes so it might not be the 8.1 upgrade. I had a bunch of issues with Punkbuster while playing BF3 in the past but I got through them. I play a lot of BF3, CS:GO, Killing Floor, Skyrim, War Thunder, Red Orchestra and most recently, the BF4 beta. I've had no problems with these games at all.

windows 8 frees up much more RAM and CPU then windows 7.
it kind of breathes new life into your computer.

before you upgrade, make sure to run the compatibility checker.
heres the link for that.

now my opinion, i loooooved windows 8, and then windows 8.1 came out. although installing windows 8.1 was kind of a hassle, it was sooo worth it. it is awesome, very snappy.
search is awesome.

gaming is great, i haven't run into a single problem and i play to many games. haha.

What are your specs? I just want to make sure 8.1 is worth the hassle. I've read some places that users with SSD's for the OS and separate drives for user files have had issues. I assume many users here on Tom's have a similar setup to mine and I hope yours is. I've been waiting about a week now to be safe.

Thanks,

Justin

Well
I haven't had any problems running any games with Win8.1 (or Win8)
I have 2 SSDs 1 for OS, and another have most my games (steam origin)

only problem i had updating from Win8 to Win8.1 was a few BSOD after 1st update
but they resolved themselves after a few restarts
and Lucid MVP Virtu (which make Win8.1 unbootable)

you won't need to re-download steam (dunno about Origin as i deleted those) games if you had it installed like me (just point steam to ur drive)

also with BF4 beta
a lot of people seem to had FPS issues with Win7
and FPS jumped up like 20-30 (if i remember correctly) by updating to Win8
the final game should be better optimize for Win7 but we won't know till its released

running
i5 3570k
P8Z77-V LX
8GB corsair vengeance
ASUS 7970 Matrix Platinum

I had an issue with Win8 on my SSD. All I did to fix it was update the SSD's firmware on the vendor's website.

I just ran it. Everything seems just fine. I had to adjust some very minor items (shortcut icons, music folder location, etc.) but it was done in 40min start to end. I guess I had things setup within their protocols. The only issue I have to find a fix for is the intel graphics settings (I don't have a dedicated gpu yet and I'm using the integrated intel hd 4000 or whatever they call it) and I cannot input the value of 1776x1000 for the resoultion which is what fits on my 2nd monitor (the 46in Sony). For some reason the new interface does not allow a custom resolution like before. 1920x1080 should work but it doesn't fit (was this way before hence the custom resolution) and I currently have it set at 1600x900 centered which just doesn't look right either. Any help here would be appreciated but I perhaps should start a new thread on that. Also, I googled how to create a backup image but unlike before I cannot seem to create a scheduled backup. I have acronis and will perhaps get more familiar with the backup system there (I was just using the cloning program intially but good thing I have this) but if someone knows how to create a scheduled backup on 8.1 please let me know (Keep in mind I already was using the windows 7 recovery steps before but now it doesn't seem to apply, so please don't suggest that will work, I've googled that already and it gets you to do 1 backup but NOT a scheduled one which I prefer to do). These 2 issues aside the computer has been up and running smooth. I'll try gaming and keep you guys posted!

ive been playing warthunder aswell, and i had no problems with it when i had windows 8.
but since the update for Windows 8.1 i keep getting a directx initializating error.
i have DirectX 11 installed.
do you have any idea what this might be, and how i'll be able to fix the issue?
ive tried updating DirectX, but it said it was up to date. tried reinstalling WarThunder aswell, and that didnt do anyhing for me either.
i play warthunder through Steam, by the way.
