Worth it to sell both my gtx 680 sli (2 gig versions) and buy one r9 290x?

I would have to add like 30-40 bucks more AFTER selling my 2 680s (2 gig versions).

Is it worth it? I use a 1080p monitor with lots of AA in my games. My main game will be battlefield 4. The rest of my specs include a 4770k and an Asus Maximus 6 hero motherboard.

Yes true ^ but you hear all this marketing crap about 3 gigs of vram recommended for bf4. I seriously doubt you need 3 gigs of vram to get smooth gameplay @ 1080p/4xaa/all on ultra (Battlefield 4). All the marketing crap is really pissing me off. The beta performance of bf4 was bad for me. SLI on or off made no difference. AA on or off made no difference. The minimum fps drops were bad. I tried everything.

The only thing that made the 40-45 fps drops bump back up to 60 all the time; was if I put everything on low (which is absurd).

Yeah that marketing crap is really annoying , theres no way it will use 3GB of vram on 1080p.
Have you downloaded the new certified driver from Nvidia , the R331 I think its called.
Gotta say tho BF4 beta has its issues will get better with the full release.
I'm running a single 680 and not having any problems with the new driver.
Have you over clocked your cards?

Stock clocks ^^^ Nothing is oced atm. I tried the beta drivers (that were meant for bf4 beta) when the beta is up. Nvidia released a newer official driver for bf4 (retail full version), but the beta is no longer running. It ended on the 15th.

Don't sell them. Getting a single 290X from a pair of 680s is a downgrade in overall performance.

I'm using a pair of 2GB 670s and at 1080 2GB is fine. Hitting vram limit isn't actually as bad as a lot of people think it is anyway...

So what are you saying here? Sell the two 680s because they only have 2 gigs of vram?

What I don't understand is these sli 680 2gig versions seem perfectly fine for crysis 3; all options maxed out, 8x MSAA, & 1080p. The biggest single player areas = no problems. So how can Battlfield 4 require more than 2 gigs of vram, if Crysis 3 doesn't even come close to taxing the 2 gigs of vram (@ 1080p)? Does not make any sense. Seems like marketing nonsense, since Dice partnered up with AMD.

They're going to recommend 3 Gb of VRAM if the game is using something like 2.1 Gb or more. Why? Well do you see any cards using something like 2.5 Gb of VRAM?

And there's been a bunch of benches that have shown 1080p using ~2.1-2.3 Gb of VRAM. So it certainly isn't 'marketing bs.'

Turn AA down and you can probably avoid it.

What is the point of having 2 680s when you cannot have aa on @ 1080p? AA ON OR OFF made ZERO difference in the bf4 beta fps drops. The only thing that made a difference was turning all the options to low (literally low, the lowest of low). Low low low low. Which is extremely sad for my system.....

Just because a game is using 2.1 gigs of vram, does not mean that the game really needs all of that to function perfectly. It just uses more than it needs because you happen to have more space on the vram. Like I said, crysis 3 with 8xmsaa/all options maxed/1080p = did not come close to taxing the 2 gigs of vram on the 680s.

So its like.................. marketing nonsense?
According to what you posted, I will be better off selling the 2 680s and getting one 290x? This is essentially what you are saying.

Don't sell them unless you can get at least 80% back of what you've paid for them.

I got 2x680 GTX Classifield cards with 4GB RAM on each of them (which is 4GB in total anyway), I knew that 2GB might be not enought at one point, so that is why I've waited for 4GB cards to be released first. I am more than happy with them, these bad boys overclock good and can play anything at max so far.

I am not planning to upgrade them to any Kepler, or probably even Maxwell cards. Instead, I might get a 3rd one down the road, if I can get it for a decent price on ebay or something... And I am looking forward to Volta (not fan of AMD cards, no reliable drivers for about a year, no PhysX - no game for me).

I didn't, they are running bf4 just fine completely maxed out. Smooth as butter. If I were to upgrade, I think I will get a card that comes out AFTER the new unreal engine is released.

if you want crisis 3 to run smooth 60fps @ 1080p maxed out you need a p score of around 20k in 3d mark 11 tried and tested. my rig was 3 way 2gb sli 680's temps were an issue v sync uses more vram and realistically 4gb should be what you want if you are buying a new card now unless its a stop gap. 2 GB did affect the game but my rig was fast enough to compensate. after switching to 1440p this issue was amplified when the frame buffer its overloaded the game suffers serve drops in fps to 0 momentarily. you might be thinking that this is irrelevant but the fact that I paid ~ £200 for what is effectively an apple IPS 2560 x1440 display (the apple logo sits behind the rebadge literally). believe me in a years time higher resolution is something you WILL be looking at if not already. so buying a card that deals with it is a good idea.

2GB VRAM IS A MINIMUM if want the best of 1080p gaming over the next couple of years. current games are already pushing that figure to its limits and it will cause problems unless you through brute force of processing overkill at it. that's tried and tested.
