Got a new laptop couple months ago and have had no issues. Just upgraded it to windows 8.1 and am having my first problem.

I use an external HD that I've had for years and have had no issues with until now. The drive is a WD green in a rosewill external enclosure. As a green drive it automatically spins down after several minutes of inactivity. If I pause a video for awhile then this does sometimes make playback hang for a moment while it spins back up, but nothing major.

Since the move to 8.1 though the drive doesn't spin back up at all once it spins down. Paused videos will crash whatever media player they were open in when once whatever video has been buffered to memory is depleted.

And if I try to access the drive itself once its spun down then windows explorer crashes and locks up the whole computer for a minute or two until windows restarts explorer.

Tested the hard drive on my wife's computer that's still on windows 8 and have no issues.

I know 8.1 is very new but I can't seem to find anyone having a similar problem.
