how to play/edit two videos in a screen

Hi, I need to play two videos in a single screen, something like news inset video for my school project. I have to run my own lecture video with another documentary in the background. How can do this? Please help
thanks in advance
(free or cheap method will be helpful )

If its just 2 videos playing at the same time then you can run 1 in windows media player and the other using VLC player or similar program. Both will run and play at the same time and you can resize both players to how you want them.

Both programs are free.
